photoblog image friday 23032007

friday 23032007

on the headphones......
"Anta Al Hakam" - Kazem Al-Saher,
"Galdir" - Sevara Nazarkhan,
"Mortravis" - Travis vs Morcheeba/Go Home Productions,
"This is Your Life" - Brad Pitt / Dust Brothers,
and "Wildfire" - Michael Martin Murphy.

meanwhile i've just noticed that over on flickr they've censored a webcomic strip that I uploaded on Feb 1st of this year. It is composed of 4 self portraits (from the same session as the Feb 1st Daily Self Portrait) along with speech bubble text outlining the concept that to "love thy neighbour" is THE fulfillment of the law. I was viewing my flickr frontpage whilst being unsigned in and I noticed that the image is entirely absent. And yet when I sign in I can see it. Then I discover theres a teeny tiny message tucked away in the margin of it's page which informs me that "This image was moderated as RESTRICTED PHOTO by Flickr Staff." I have no idea how long this image has been made invisible by them and I can think of no reason whatsoever why they have done this. It is bizarre and exceptionally annoying.

Hey Russell...nice cupids with green guitars and violins, which nicely counterpoint your flushed with indignation face.

I guess the fine print somewhere on flickr says it is a condiditon of use that they can censor material as they see fit. If you have been a bit challenging with your material then maybe their censorship shaould be regarded s a backhanded compliment...treat it with childlike amusement.
russell higgs: wether its a compliment or not, the reality is that the information was made restricted viewing.

It means no one can arrive there serendipitously.

the information, the ideas, had been made ghettoised, made into a gated community.

Information has to be free. If an idea is considered to be "bad" information then it should be dealt with via a rigorous application of better ideas, not censorship.

and re the fine print..... yes. this highlights the problems of webcommuity spaces being more like private shopping centres than public open spaces.

there was a documentary on Second Life the other night on our box and they were a little quiet about how they are starting to ban some content within that 3d world. if you ever make it big russell you will have to set up your own web server and then control our own content. with regards to the photo it is fantastic. Well worth the effort.

Russell

Took a visit to your Flickr page.

Love the comics. Quick and sharp. So there IS a method to your madness. Now... see if they had not censored one of your comics you may have never mentioned it here and I would not have gone to Flickr and enjoyed your work.

Kudos to Flickr. Kudos to Censorship. ;P
russell higgs: Thanks. I'm glad you found and enjoyed my webcomic strips.
flickr wrote to me today to say that the image is now viewable by everybody via regular UNrestricted access again
