So...I have had a peek at the material you are referencing. There seems to be a couple of themes here:
1. Our society is becoming increasingly desensitised to the brutality of torture.
2.Christianity [perhaps ALL organised religions] are bad for us, as they are...or become...a ready tool for mass brainwashing.
3. USofA [Leaders and the brainwashed dudsoes that elect 'em] is unfit to be the sole direction-maker of mankind.

So....?

Are you making a "call to arms"?

I think a lot of folks already believe some or all of these themes to be true. They tend to laugh a lot at stuff like Monty Python, where these broadbrush things were lampooned brilliantly. I think the insidiousness, that lies in the detail, is where the Internet can assist in changing the creeping rot.
russell higgs: what AM I saying?

When I was a child (growing up in the 60s and 70s) I didn't watch news reports on tv nor ever read newspapers. I had no concept what left or right meant. I didn't know what the political parties represented nor in fact that they represented anything. Its possible that I didn't even know the name of whoever was prime minister etc etc.

I also didn't consume war stories, as were the traditional narratives targetted at boys. Thus the big recurring war story theme, the one about the evil nazis, passed me by until I was about 11 or 12. And when another boy at school did eventually tell me something about it all, I remember asking my mum "why didn't you ever tell me about Hitler?"

However, even then learning something about it, it existed as isolated information. Something in the past. I still had no concept about the implications of right or left wing parties, nor which parties were left or right. And of course I had no knowledge at all regarding the larger narrative of the rise of American global corporate power during the 20th century.

Fundamentally I had no political opinion as a child or teen because I knew nothing and it would seem that nothing in my daily enviroment was presenting me with any information or conversations to digest and form an opinion with. Lets not forget we're talking the 60s and 70s, a hyper radical period, yet I didn't know anything about vietnam or trade unions or nixon or situationism etc etc

And all this despite being a highly intelligent child I should add.

I didn't really know anything about class either. Generally most of the main adults from my childhood were probably classifiable as conservative voting working class. When I was 16 I left school and left my parent's home. I began to meet and make friends with people who had been brought up in either a more informed liberal middle class enviroment or working class families that voted socialist not conservative. I began to learn about the world and pay it some thought and attention. And by the time the political landscape in the west had lurched sharply towards the far right with Thatcher n Reagan, I was more aware of what was going on.

The point of this is to say that I know first hand about not paying attention to the world, no matter how big or blatant the world's stories might be. Ignorance is a massive massive problem.

Hi Russell. Thanks for that information, which perhaps helps a little...as a child in the '60s and '70s you were an ignorant [some might say innocent] child; this has sensitised you to the dangers of ignorance, and so you feel the drive to assist ignorant folks in obtaining knowledge now you are no longer afflicted with ignorance...I think!

Increasingly, the Internet is placing data [information, knowledge] within reach of folks. I think, though, that is not going to overcome the massive massive ignorance phenomenon [I use that word deliberately in place of your word "problem"]; I think there are a couple of reasons for this:
1. Many [perhaps most] people want to be ignorant, as this presents them with a cop-out when it comes to acceptance of responsibility for nastiness, and
2. We have failed to come up yet with a way to tell good information from rubbish on the Internet, so we have this overload of stuff without reliable "quality" labels.

I feel you are doing a bit of "chicken little" stuff...you know, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling". I think this might actually paralyse the ignorant, rather than stimulate them.
russell higgs: I think what I'm doing is constantly distilling and contextualising information in an effort to find ways to articulate stuff. I'm doing it for myself and I'm doing it publicly on the web rather than in a private handwritten notebook.

I'm reminded of something that Ian Crossland has often underlined in his Vlogs, he points out that when he is talking to the camera he is talking to himself rather than to an audience or to his suscribers. He is working things out, out loud, on video, and is choosing to share that experience publicly via the web, via Youtube etc....

I'm not interested in leading any horses to the water and then finding I can't make them drink. Other people have to sort their own problems in their own time. I'm dealing with myself and I'm publicly showing some of my working-out-in-the-margins process. The "self portrait" aspect of this project extends to the text aswell.

Specifically on the subject of torture, the knowledge that this country that I live in is colluding in torture is the single greatest heartbreaking tragedy of my life so far. It is knowledge that haunts me every single day. And I need to find ways of expressing that.

plus its perhaps important to also focus on the humour that book ends my "friendly Fascism" hypertext. The mp3 remixed speeches and the propaganda remix poster project. Chicken Little never had hypertext.

By the way...a funny thing just happened...Shutterchance just refused to accept my last entry, so I changed the word "crap" to "rubbish" and it was then ok.
russell higgs: I know, its unbelievably victorian isn't it.
And in today's BBC NEWS......

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/6501499.stm

"A US court has dismissed a lawsuit against former US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld over claims prisoners were tortured in Iraq and Afghanistan."

"The court accepted that the nine men who sued had been tortured - and detailed the torture in its ruling."

"But Judge Thomas Hogan ruled the five Iraqis and four Afghans did not have US constitutional rights, and also that Mr Rumsfeld was immune from such suits."

The nine men suffered abuse including being:

hung upside-down and slapped until they lost consciousness
stabbed with knives
subjected to electric shocks
deprived of sleep by loud noises and bright lights
grabbed by aggressive dogs
They also were subjected to sexual humiliation.

None was ever charged with a crime.

All were released after detentions of one month to one year.

Some were detained multiple times.

The complaint alleged that the three officers knew torture and abuse were occurring and were present when officers under their command were committing torture and abuse.

The complaint against Mr Rumsfeld - brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and Human Rights First - focused on an order he signed in December 2002 authorising new methods for interrogating prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. etc etc

Hi Russell. Your public journey of self-discovery, using the technology of the Internet, is an interesting thing to do.

Actually, it is pretty much what many people are also doing with their personal blogs, although most of these people are perhaps a little less inclined to "expose" themselves than you are. Indeed...I have a blog; most of the dozens of stories I have published probably come across more as dis-interested observations of my world; but I do occasionally cross the line and make my feelings known on certain subjects [ example: http://www.all-my-world.com/pblog/index.php?entry=entry070319-041708 ...a story relating to skin-colour bigotry, and the cosmetic industry's role in it ].

There is a raft of stuff I would classify as "man's inhumanity to man" ...I see "torture" as one of the extreme examples, along with "genocide", "rape as a tool for ethnic cleansing", and others... and I applaud your highlighting of it in your public self-discovery journey.

My strong belief is that these things cannot be obliterated by attacking it at the government level; it has to be tackled at the individual level.
