friday 29052009

Sunday morning 31st may 2009

The day has arrived. The beginning of the end. This phase of my Daily Self Portrait project is finished.

I always said that if I felt I was cruising through this project, more often than I was innovating or surprising myself, then it would be time to stop. And this past month or so I have felt like I have just been going through the motions most of the time.

I had hoped to at least keep going till the project's 3rd anniversary, mid July. But yesterday I was out all day with a friend and then we ended up at a party in the evening and while I was there I realised I wasn't going to bother making the effort to come home in time to make saturday's portrait.

Every day, since I started this project back in July 2006, I've always stuck to the criteria that each portrait had to be made fresh that day, sometime before midnight.

There will be a new Daily Project in some form in the near future. And some time quite soon I will collate the archives of this project into a book and poster. There is a whole set of as yet unseen alternative poses from the past 3 years which are very often the best shots from each day (whereas this online archive is the best shots that fulfill the criteria I set; it's always a forward facing identity card pose).

Stay tuned. Keep well. Thanks for dropping by.

It's been a great ride, thanks, Russell, and it is a stupendous body of work.

Love to you, too.

Hello Russell
Although I missed the end of your project a few weeks ago, today being June 17th, I wanted to say a huge congratulations for almost three years of your very-interesting daily project postings - it's a fantastic commitment, I've really loved seeing the originality in the changing features day after day, and it's been great dipping in & out over the last few years to see this project ticking along!
I hope you're not too disappointed that only one other person has noted the end of the project though?
And I look forward to the whole thing been available in hard-copy print.
Good luck Russell.
John.
russell higgs: Thanks very much smile

You're a crazy dude, Russell, yet at the same time one of the sanest I have come across. This entire statement I intend as a compliment, as I believe craziness is a highly under-rated quality, and true sanity is few and far between! Keep up the cool work! H.
russell higgs: ... Thanks Zeus. My most recent exciting news is.... since Monday 20th Sept 2010 my movie, 999 Days (in 3 minutes) has been shortlisted for YouTube Play. See the shortlist at youtube.com/play ... http://youtube.com/play
